Twelve from the original 22 contestants who passed the auditions last month will vie for the top prize this coming Friday from 6pm to 9pm at the PSD premises. Elimination rounds were held on June 18 and 25 at the Hyatt Plaza Mall.
“This contest is definitely bigger than last year’s not only of the number of those who showed interest to join the competition but also in terms of preparation,” said Aladino Bulan, Vice President for External Affairs, Pag-Iribang Bicolnon Qatar (PIBQ).
PIBQ, one of the active Filipino organisations here whose members hail from the Bicol Region in the Philippines, is hosting the annual talent search whose proceeds will benefit their compatriots back in the Philippines.
“As in the past years, through this contest we are going to extend a helping hand to the ‘Batang Matalino Award’ (Smart Child Award),” Bulan said.
The project which is a scholarship grant for valedictorians in Bicol was initiated by PIBQ several years ago. Attractive cash awards await the top five competitors in the grand finals of the search which will also feature performances of the Heat Wave Dancers.
Since its launch in 2003, Sing Out Doha has been one of the most awaited spectacular events that enthral thousands of Filipino singing buffs all over Doha.
As a fund-raising event, it was able to help a number of outreach programmes like providing assistance to distressed overseas Filipino workers, educational assistance to rural people in the Philippines and various other charities.
With nearly 200 active members, PIBQ has been at the helm of helping out others through the events it organises during its nine-year existence.
Aside from the annual singing contest, PIBQ conducted a number of other activities this year, one of which is a two-night concert of world-renowned singer-songwriter David Pomeranz.
PIBQ is launching another talent search this December targeting young talented amateur singers.
“The contest will be another musical extravaganza which people who love music could look forward to,” said Bulan, adding it would help in honing younger talents.
